The Law of Attraction
What
is the Law of Attraction?
We hear about Law of Attraction mentioned
everywhere, as it is the latest buzzword. It’s the “BIG SECRET” that’s really
no secret at all and not really the newest craze. It has been around since time
immemorial. The Law of Attraction is a Universal Law just like gravity. And
just like we know that a rock dropped from a cliff will fall, we can know the
simple “Truths” about the Law of Attraction. As you come to know these “Truths”,
these laws, you will have the Key that unlocks the vaults of your deepest
desire sand you can have your heart’s desires.
Yes, it really is a law, and a
Universal Law, at that. It is there, ever-present and ever working, whether we
heed it or not. Since it’s a constant given, it would be to our benefit to know
something about it so we can use it in our lives. If we don’t consciously use
it, we will still be unconsciously using it – but perhaps, not with the same
favorable results.
There is a
fundamental law of attraction in the universe that guides people’s lives and is
the underlying power behind all things. This law was expressed by Napoleon Hill
when he said, “We become what we think about.” This profound truth has been
stated in many different languages and cultures throughout history. In the
second century of the Common Era, the Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher
Marcus Aurelius said, “Our life is what our thoughts make it.” This idea has
been developed over time and has now become a central tenet in many spiritual
traditions.
In relation to the law of attraction, we have
extensive references to the idea of karma in the teachings of the Buddha. It is
explained to us that our actions not only have an effect in this life but in
future lives and that this is the reason for our own misfortunes right this
minute. If we are to ever escape the endless cycles of misfortune, we will have
to change our direction and achieve an end to our sorrows.
If anyone says that a man
or woman must reap in this
life according to his
present deeds, in that case there
is no religious life, nor
is an opportunity afforded for
the entire extinction of
sorrow. But if anyone says that
what a man or woman reaps
in this and future lives
accords with his or her
deeds present and past, in that
case there is a religious
life, and an opportunity is
afforded for the entire
extinction of a sorrow.
BUDDHA
In the New Testament, Christians are very familiar
with the phrase “As ye sow, so shall ye reap.” This idea, presented to Christians and
Buddhists alike, has also been presented in many other great religions on Earth
and has been expounded by modern philosophers as well. Earl Nightengale has
referred to the law of attraction as “The Strangest Secret”. When asked by his
readers, “Why do you call it the strangest secret?” he explains that it is a
secret that is really “no secret” at all. It’s not because the law of
attraction is hidden from view that makes it so strange. Infact, it isn’t
hidden. It’s extremely obvious and yet nobody seems to be aware of it. “We
become what we think about” is no “secret” at all and that’s what makes it so
strange.
You’ve heard
(and even used) such clichés as birds of a feather flock together,
and like attracts like. A cliché is something that has become overly
familiar or commonplace, even trite or hackneyed, and usually is frowned upon
in good writing. On the other hand, a cliché becomes a cliché because of the
truth it embodies. Why something attracts to itself something else that
is similar has to do with the magnetic quality of the molecules of energy that
comprise these two ‘somethings’. I don’t have enough space here to tell you
exactly how that works (I’ll leave that to Rev. Bob), but it does work. The
second statement that you will want to take on faith is one you already“feel”
within you. And that is that we are physical extensions of a non-physical
Energy known to us as God, Divine Power, and Source Energy. We also believe
that there is nothing that is not God because we know that nothing exists
outside of God – it couldn’t if God is all-powerful and ever-present.
Therefore, we must be made up of the same Energy that is God/Universal, Divine
Energy or infinite intelligence. So, you wonder, “Does this mean that I
am divine?” Absolutely! “Hmm, well,” you may say, “I don’t feel very divine.”
That’s probably true, occasionally – or even rather often. So let’s take a look
at why that may be so.
First, we must understand the
nature of Divine Energy. It is: 1. All Good (there can’t be some good and some
bad as they would cancel each other out). 2. Pure Joy (for the same reason as
number one). 3. Pure Love. 4. Pure Bliss. 5. Total Abundance (all forthe same
reasons). So, if Divine Energy (also called Source Energy since it’s That from
which all else is derived) is Love, Joy, Bliss and Abundance, then we, by
extension must also be Love, Joy, Bliss and Abundance. Only somewhere along the
way we have lost touch with that awareness. Life was never meant to be a
struggle. According to Abraham in the powerful book, Ask and It Is Given,
upon our choosing physical existence we said, “I will love pouring myself
into this physical body, into physical time-space-reality, for that environment
will cause me to focus the powerful Energy that is me into something more
specific. And in the specifics of that focus, there will be powerful motion
forward – and joy.” Physical Life is an extension of a Loving,
Joyous, Blissful, Abundant, Non-Physical Energy and we took on physical form to
experience this Life. It is often said, in our bibles and other
religious books, that we are created out of the Mind of God. The truth is that
we are the Mind of God, and we do the creating – through our thoughts.
That is, we think the thought and Source Energy does the rest. For many years I
had a slogan taped to my refrigerator: If you think you can, or think you
can’t, you’re right! No matter what we think – we will have it – if we
think it strongly enough, with enough emotion. Therefore, thoughts of fear,
lack and ill-health hold as much power as thoughts of joy, bliss and abundance.
We get what we think about. This is called the Law of Attraction, and it
works like this: Divine Source Energy (God by any of Its names) is what makes
up one hundred percent of our Universe. Every particle of Energy that comprises
every single thought, word, deed and substance already exists in its potential
state in Source Energy. And Source Energy is impartial; It gives to everyone
the same. Whatever you think about with any clarity, you will receive.
Impartial, by the way, is not the same as unloving, as many people interpret
it. In fact, Divine Energy is so loving It gives us absolutely everything we
think about, unequivocally. Therefore, when you think a thought, you
immediately begin drawing the substance of that thought to you (remember the
magnetic nature of Energy particles).
And, once again, you are probably sputtering,
“But, I don’t think that I want bad stuff to happen in my life; it just
does anyway.” Well, I’m sorry to have to tell you that if you wish to know your
clearest, truest, thoughts, look around you. Wayne Dyer says it best:
“You’ll see it when you believe it.” The
fact is there is nothing, absolutely nothing, happening in your life,
which you haven’t accepted and allowed on some level of your awareness.
Many of us have spent long
hours in meditative thought making statements such as, “I don’t want to be
sick”, or “I’m tired of being depressed”. Such thoughts, although they seem to
be denying that which you do not want, are actually attracting “like” energy to
them. The more you think about being in debt, in pain, or in fear (even when
these are thoughts of denial), the more of that same thing will be attracted to
you. As hard as it seems, you must change your thinking if you wish to change
what you are attracting. When I do affirmations, they must contain only
elements of truth. Therefore, I can’t say (and make myself believe it), “I’m
very wealthy,” when I have unpaid bills in stacks on my desk and zip in my bank
account. I can’t say with anything near belief, “I have a healthy vigorous
body”, when every move I make causes some joint to clamor in arthritic protest.
What I can say is, “I enjoy having more than enough money to pay my bills”, and
“I enjoy moving easily and freely”. These are statements I can get my mind and
belief around because they are true. And these statements attract what I wish
to have. If you pay attention to the thoughts you use about a situation, you
can literally change your life.
We all participate in the collective unconscious,
and in many cases it works well for us. It keeps trees standing upright, and
cars from falling apart, and houses standing, and cotton soft, and rocks hard.
But remember – it is our belief, as we share in the collective
unconscious, that constitutes their intrinsic value and keeps then at
status quo. Therefore, when you’re presented with a feeling of “well,
that’s just the way it is,” you can either accept it or reject it. But
remember, in order to reject it, you can’t simple deny it. Observing with
negative emotion is the same as accepting. Stating “war sucks”, for instance,
will only add power to war. Thinking and believing that peace in your home and
in your life is a feeling that gives you joy, is one of the first steps toward
changing the ‘collective-war-unconsciousness’, as well as the collective
consciousness.
We can and must take responsibility for our lives.
If the ‘World’ feels like too much
to handle, start with your own life. See how many times
a day you can catch yourself thinking a negative thought about something you
don’t want in your life. Then consciously choose to change it to a positive
thought that gives you a better feeling. Always look for a better way to feel.
Your emotions are your gauge to what you are attracting.
So what is this Law? How does it work? And
most importantly, how can we use it for our own good? What is this Secret? It’s really pretty simple.
“Thoughts are Things” and “Like Attracts Like”. Yes, that’s it. You get what
you think about, whether wanted or unwanted. This is an important distinction
because we are always “creating”. The question to ask is “am I creating
consciously or unconsciously”? If you are not manifesting what you want in your
life, then perhaps you are not consciously creating. So, the key is to
consciously create what you want.
How can you do this?
In the early 1900’s, Wallace D Wattles wrote a book
called “The Science of Getting Rich”. His book led Rhonda Byrne down a long and
winding path that culminated in the production of the movie phenomenon called
“The Secret”. In the words of Wallace D. Wattles, "The ownership of money
and property comes as a result of doing things in a certain way. Those who do
things in this certain way, whether on purpose or accidentally, get rich. Those
who do not do things in this certain way, no matter how hard they work or how
able they are, remain poor. It is a natural law that like causes always produce
like effects. Therefore, any man or woman who learns to do things in this
certain way will infallibly get rich." “The Science of Getting Rich” by
Wattles is about teaching us how to do things in this "certain" way
to become rich. I propose we substitute the word “Rich” for“ Abundance”.
Abundance is a great word full of life, purpose and fullness. It encompasses
all the things we hold dear in our lives. So, when we use the word “abundance”,
it can interchangeably mean wealth, health, happiness, joy, peace, love,
family, passion, our vocation, contribution, personal excellence, spiritual
goals and whatever it is you desire. So, if the key is to do things in a
certain way to have “Abundance”, then what is that certain way and how can you
consciously create what you want?
The Law of Attraction
doesn’t give you what you want; it gives you what you are paying attention to.
Energy flows where attention goes. The Law of Attraction always takes you
literally. So if you want a new career but are always upset about your current
job, then your focus is on your current unwanted job and that’s what you’ll
get. You will always get more of what you are resonating with. You have to “Be”
what you want first to attract the situation you want. Your state of “BE”ing
always comes before the “HAVE”ing. Most of us think, I’ll “DO”, so I’ll “HAVE”,
then I’ll BE happy. It’s the other way around. BE, then DO, and then you’ll
HAVE. A properly aligned state of Being makes you an attracting magnet for the
things you want because it allows the Law of Attraction to go to work for you.
Remember, energy flows where attention goes. It’s important to give your
attention daily to the things that you want. You must give a conscious focus
here because otherwise, what can happen is that other thoughts will create your
unplanned and undesired life. We are constantly bombarded with images, thoughts
and beliefs from the media, our family, friends, co-workers and these thoughts
can take over if you are not consciously creating ones which match your
thoughts to your
desires. Spend 10 minutes or more a day consciously given attention to
what you want. Use creative visualization during this time to align your
thoughts with your desires. Really get into it. Feel it. Be it. Claim it. It’s
yours! Even spending many short intervals
throughout the day will help. Studies have proven that just 17 seconds of
focused attention on your desires will yield amazing results. How many 17
second intervals in a day are you willing to take to make your dreams come
true?
“Whatever you are giving Your attention to causes you to
Emit a vibrational frequency, and
The vibrations that you offer equal Your asking, which equals your Point of
Attraction.” – Abraham
PRACTICE GRATITUDE EVERY DAY
Be grateful now in advance, as if your dreams already
exist, because on a quantum level, they do. The Universe is a system of energy
and energetically it does not know the difference between the “reality” you see
with your physical eyes and the “reality” you see with your Visualizations and
Gratitude. Think of the Universe as a big toy store. Everything you could
possibly imagine is there for you to have. In fact, if you can imagine it, it
exists. Nothing is too outrageous to have. Imagine you have just uncovered
Aladdin’s Lamp and go shopping. Be Grateful in advance every single day. Place
your attention on what you want and be grateful for it. If you already have
your
desires, how grateful would you “BE”? Being grateful for the things you
have now puts you in a state of acceptance, which thru the Law of Attraction
and vibration, brings more of the same vibration.
